Does not disappoint. If you are driving here put the parking lot as your destination or you get shuttled down a side road with very few parking spots (but closer to the outdoor free museum). Tickets are purchased at the cafe area across the street and there is a small museum area downstairs there. Be sure to ask about the “tour” as the guide will give you lots of good information about the history and construction of the church.

What’s a stave church?
Stave churches are unique for their distinct post-and-lintel timber construction using vertical posts (“staves”) as the load-bearing framework, a technique evolved from Viking shipbuilding. They are also characterized by their intricately carved decor, which blends Norse mythological themes like dragons with Christian symbolism. These wooden churches, often protected by tar and featuring steep, tiered roofs, are among the oldest surviving wooden churches in the world, serving as a significant link to Norway’s medieval past.

Wir waren nur kurz auf der Durchreise an der Stabkirche Heddal. Parken war problemlos möglich. Die Architektur ist wirklich beeindruckend und absolut sehenswert. Im Nachhinein habe ich noch mehr über die Kirche gelesen – sehr spannend! Für einen kurzen Abstecher absolut empfehlenswert. Beim nächsten Mal würde ich mir auch den Innenraum anschauen (Eintritt ist kostenpflichtig), dafür hatten wir leider keine Zeit.

This church is a wonderful thing to look at. And smell. Can't get that from any pictures- it smells like warm tar. It has had some modifications, but is still very interesting. Difficult to view from inside though - just way too many people. Local guides are worth listening to. You can buy souvenirs and coffee from the ticket office. Also- there is a place to sit there, which can be very useful in case of an extremely hot weather.

C'est la plus grosse eglise en bois de Norvège. Elle est très impressionnante et très jolie. Les premières traces date du 12 ème siècle !

Ich denke die Stabkirche gehört bei einem Besuch in Norwegen einfach dazu. Ein tolles Bauwerk das man sich schon ansehen sollte. Es gibt noch ein Museumsdorf - auch sehr interessant und gegenüber ein Museum und ein Café. Lustig fand ich im Museum das man da "alte Kleidung" anziehen konnte.

Piękne stare miejsce z klimatem. W otoczeniu mały cmentarz, ale widok piękny szczególnie latem. Dużo miejsc parkingowych , cisza i spokój. Polecam zajrzec do środka . Cena biletu to 100 Kr, ale klimat świetny 🙂

Een van de mooiere staafkerken in Noorwegen, of beter van diegen die wij bezochten. Mooi gelegen, en een leuke stopplaatsen tijdens een rit. We gingen niet in de kerk maar wandelden er wat rond. Er is ook een museum maar we hadden niet de tijd om dat te bezoeken.
